A Florida Boating & Fishing Paradise
St. Johns River Hill and Welaka are hard to beat when it comes to great inland Florida boating and fishing. In fact, you might hear Welaka referred to in some quarters as the
Bass Fishing Capitol of the World!
It's a fact that Welaka is home to some of the best large-mouth bass fishing in the world with the abundant fresh waterways that surround this beautiful Florida river town. There are several tributaries and natural springs in the area that feed the mighty St. Johns River including Blue Springs
-- one of the best winter manatee habitats in the state. Lakes large and small abound. Boat rentals and charters are available in Welaka along with boat repair and services. Welaka Bait and Tackle is convenient to residents right in town.
Boating and fishing is available on many close bodies of water including:
- St. Johns River
- Dunn's Creek
- Crescent Lake
- Ocklawaha River
- Little Lake George
- Lake George
- Lake Kerr
Amateur and professional fishermen alike enjoy the black bass fishing from Lake George to Dunn's Creek and beyond. Other species of fish include speckled perch and pan fish of all descriptions that can be caught year round. There are several fishing tournaments around Welaka and the region throughout the year that draw participation from local anglers and pros.
Welaka has an excellent accessible public boat launching facility with a floating dock a mile from St. Johns River Hill. Day trips and even extended overnight travel is possible along the St. Johns River. Take the river north to Palatka or even all the way to Jacksonville and the mouth at the Atlantic Ocean. Head south to Lake George, Silver Glen Springs, Hontoon Island State Park and Blue Springs. There are marinas, restaurants and even lodging opportunities in both directions.
